Qualifying round
Six contestants will pick one letter between A-F. The player who’s picked #1 became the team captain. The player that picked #2 sat in position #1, the player that picked #3 in position #2, the player picked #4 in position #3, and the player picked #5 in position #4. The player who’s selected #6 returned to the contestant pool with the possibility of being back for another qualifying round, time permitting. Player selection continues until numbers 1 to 5 are revealed. In the event the #6 is revealed before the last round, the round will continue until all spots are assigned.
One Qualifying game is played with a second one being played if time permits in 50-to-90-minute panels. The players that select the letters are assigned by lot or spot (i.e., VIP, Weekend, Day Pass) with the best membership getting first picked.
Main Game
Tower of Greed
The team then attempted to answer multiple choice questions of increasing value while climbing the “Tower of Greed.” The first question was played for ¥25,000 and question values increased by that amount up to ¥100,000 for the fourth question. The fifth question was worth double or ¥200,000, the sixth worth ¥500,000, the seventh worth double again ¥1,000,000 and the eighth worth ¥2,000,000. As with Otaku Millionaire Hot Seat, the amounts were not cumulative.
Question | Value | Prize (Crunchyroll Gift Cards) |
1 | ¥25,000 | $10 |
2 | ¥50,000 | $12.50 |
3 | ¥75,000 | $15 |
4 | ¥100,000 | $20 |
5 | ¥200,000 | $25 |
6 | ¥500,000 | $30 |
7 | ¥1,000,000 | $35 |
8 | ¥2,000,000 | $50 |
First four questions
Starting with the team member who selected #5, multiple choice questions were asked, and the team member locked in their answer. The team captain could accept their answer or reject it and select a different answer. The first two questions contained four possible choices with 30 second time limits and the third and fourth questions contained five possible choices with 60 second time limits. Time limits are set for Anime Convention Limits.
Contestants competed for an equal share of the question value, which is called a Share which is one-fifth of the team winnings. If the team captain accepted a wrong answer for any of the first four questions, the team left with nothing. The team captain could decide to quit with the money won thus far or risk their collective winnings to continue playing the game.
Contestants getting four questions correctly will have a guaranteed share of ¥25,000 should the team missed at that point.
Aniplex of America Terminator
After the fourth question the host provided the team with the category for the next question and the opportunity to leave the game with ¥100,000.
If the captain decides to continue playing, the “Aniplex of America Terminator” is activated and selects one team member at random. The player selected could accept ¥10,000 ($10) in a Crunchyroll Gift Card (The “Aniplex of America Terminator” winnings will not be at risk should the contestant lose the Terminator, or the team missed a future question) to challenge another team member to a one-question showdown to stay in the game.
Terminator Questions were always either Non-otaku Related for the ¥200,000 and ¥500,000 Terminators and Otaku Related for the ¥1,000,000 Terminator. Terminator Questions always had two possible answers to choose from regardless of format and are set in English.
If the player who buzzed in correctly answered the question, their teammate was eliminated. If the player provided an incorrect answer or didn’t answer within five seconds, they were eliminated. However, if the player eliminated keeps the Terminator Bonus.
If the captain was eliminated, the contestant who won the challenge would become the new captain (center chair). Otherwise, the showdown winner kept his/her original seat.
Special Rules for Terminator Questions:
All Terminator Questions: Jacob would read the question with two possible answers, contestants will be allowed to buzz in at any time if they knew the answer, though Jacob would immediately stop reading the question at that point. If Jacob stops reading the question, the player that buzzes in must give the answer that is on his card, so that player had make sure that there was nothing important that the player missed that could help that player.
¥200,000 and ¥500,000 Questions: Safety money is at risk as well as regular winnings.
¥1,000,000 Question: Safety money is not at risk, only regular winnings.
The Terminator will be played prior to the ¥200,000, ¥500,000 and ¥1,000,000 questions for Otaku Greed.
Each player that has gotten the Terminator can have one Terminator Bonus given to them. If they were selected additional times and the person that was called out did not have a Terminator Bonus, then that player gets the Terminator Bonus.
Higher-level questions
Beginning with the ¥200,000 question, each question contained four correct answers instead of one answer. The number of possible answers varied depending on the value of the question: the ¥200,000 question had six possible answers (four correct answers and two bluff answers), the ¥500,000 question had seven (four correct and three bluffs), and the ¥1 million question had eight (four correct and four bluffs aka a 50/50 split).
After the ¥200,000 question as well as all six of its possible answers were revealed, the captain of the team was given a “Freebie” that he or she could use on any one question from that point onward. The Freebie eliminated one incorrect answer from the question for which it was used. The Freebie could only be used BEFORE contestants began providing their answers as the captain could not use the Freebie once answers had already been provided.
Each of the four team members other than the captain were required to give one answer. If there were fewer than four additional team members, the captain could elect to give a response or require a teammate to give an additional response. Answers are locked in when selected. The time limits for the Higher-level questions were ¥200,000 (120 Seconds), ¥500,000 (180 Seconds), and ¥1 million (240 Seconds). Clock would start when Jacob tells the first player to give an answer. The team must give all four answers before the clock hits zero.
The answers were revealed one at a time. If all four answers were correct, the team won the money for that question and was allowed to continue.
As with the fourth question, the category of the next question was revealed prior to the decision to quit or continue playing. After the sixth question, the team that got the ¥500,000 Question Correctly and play on for the ¥1,000,000 will have a guaranteed share of ¥50,000 should the team missed at that point.
The ¥2,000,000 question (Jackpot Hill)
Prior to the question each team member, individually, at Jackpot Hill will decide either to quit with their share of the team’s collective winnings or continue playing.
This question is played by members of the team that selected to play on at Jackpot Hill.
The ¥2,000,000 question had nine possible answers, four of which were correct and five of which were incorrect. The players that play this question will be given 30 seconds to think about their choices, and one player has 10 seconds to read them off. If four answers were not given within the time limit, the players would lose everything but their share of the ¥50,000 that was answered at the ¥500,000. No answers can be changed.
